Calcium Test

Calcium is one of the major minerals required by the human body. Calcium is required by all parts of the body. Calcium also forms the important building block in the body for the production of bones and teeth. The presence of calcium in the blood is therefore essential for the maintenance of these important body parts. Calcium also plays an important part in the functioning of the nervous system and in the functioning of the heart.

The calcium test is therefore a crucial medical test used to establish the presence or absence of calcium in the blood of a human being. As far as the patient is concerned, the calcium test is a very short and simple test. It is performed in exactly the same way as one would perform any other type of blood test. Blood is drawn using a needle which is placed into the appropriately selected vein. The area of the puncture is first cleaned in order to ensure that there is less chance of an infection developing in the vein puncture site. Once the blood is drawn, it is sent to a laboratory for analysis. The calcium test is then conducted in the laboratory to understand how much calcium there is in the given sample of blood. Based on this, the patient’s condition can be accurately diagnosed.

A calcium test is conducted to check for many different conditions including malfunctioning of the kidneys. The calcium test range lies between 8 and 10 milligrams per deciliter of blood. As with most blood tests, there are a number of different drugs that can interact in such a way as to affect the results of the test. There are more than 30 different medical conditions that can generate calcium test results that are either above the calcium test range or below the calcium test range.

Once the calcium test levels have been established in a test, the doctor will prescribe the correct medication to sort out the problem. If the issue lies with the kidneys, then further testing is needed. This further testing is done in order to ensure that underlying problem is detected before the patient can receive any treatment. For this reason, the calcium test is usually conducted as a part of other tests that are associated with the organ or medical condition that is suspected. Often tests like the BUN test will be performed alongside the calcium test to check the function of the kidneys.
